iPhone App Stops the Arguing Over Time Spent on TV, Computers, Video Games and More
The arguments over screen time take place in countless households everyday:
"You've played on that computer too much this week!" "No I haven't!" ...
"She's played more than me!" ...
"I've practiced enough this week" ... "No you haven't!"
Kids' Quotas, an activity time tracker, manages children's time in any activity. Each quota represents an activity for one child. The app tracks the time that each child spends doing each activity. First, a parent and child work together to establish the time limits. They then create a quota for each activity with the appropriate timeframe (daily, weekly, monthly) and the allowed time. Finally, a simple touch starts and stops each quota timer. A status bar progresses as time elapses, instantly showing the time remaining. When "Time's Up", that's it! No more time means no arguments. Kids' Quotas can encourage too. Children can be congratulated when they have read enough hours in a week or practiced their musical instrument enough minutes in a day. "The idea came to me after daily requests by my girls to use my various iThingies, such as iTouches and iPad, as well as computers and TV," said Bradley Keyes, founder of Active Mind Apps. "We were constantly debating over how much they'd played and whether or not it was too much. My wife and I decided to lay some ground rules, like only 2 hours of iThingie time per week, and I created an app that tracks the time spent by each girl for each week. They get to choose when to use their time, within reason, but once their time's up, they're done. It really worked! They don't even ask for more, they just wait until next week. Kids' Quotas has stopped the arguing."
